How To Make Any Business Bullet Proof All Year Round

Most businesses fall for the same mistake.

It doesn’t seem like one even when you are told about it. Especially if there are no imminent issues.

Trust me though. It can be very costly and can make the difference between having a business and no longer having a business.

I have made this mistake and wish someone had told it to me in the past.

If you only have 1 of anything in your business, then you need to act now to change it. Having only 1 of something is worse than not having it.

These singular pillars end up holding your entire business up. If they get knocked down, they could take your whole business with it.

Do You Have These ‘Holes’ in Your Business?

A lot of businesses rely on getting new customers via one method.

If this lead generation method comes to a halt or ceases to exist anymore then how do you get new customers through the door.

It may sound dramatic, but it can happen. Lots of local businesses solely rely on word of mouth. It can serve lots of businesses well. Although, word of mouth is not certain or infinite.

Even if someone recommends you what is to say they are your ideal customer?

You will also find a lot of businesses only have 1 person who is in charge of all the finances, or all the access/passwords etc.

Having only 1 person who knows the full ins and outs of a role or part of your business is a death sentence waiting to happen.

What happens if this person becomes really sick, takes a sudden leave of absence, or worse still dies? Sounds morbid, but it happens unfortunately.

Even if you avoid all this, how much can you really trust someone? That is a lot of power to be held by one person who is ultimately not responsible for the business.

I know of cases where people have up and let because they have had enough. Sometimes they just leave the industry, other times they end up making their own firm, or worse joining a competitor.

Either or, you are left in the lurch with a big mess to try clean up.

You Still Have Time to Fix Things

If this is how your business looks then some alarm bells should be ringing. It is not the end of the world and there is no need to overly panic. You can still fix it.

If business is fine, then you have time. Just don’t sit their and think “all is good right now; I will get round to it later”. Because later usually comes before you know it.

You need to start changing 1s into 2s.

These pillars may be holding up everything right now, but any cracks will grow quickly and break without warning.

As they say, “best to be safe than sorry”. As the business owner you want to make sure there is nothing that can easily penetrate your walls. Especially not internally.

You will probably have to train people on certain systems or processes, and they may be reluctant about having to learn it all. You might even need to hire in people to assist in some areas.

This may all seem like a big pain in the ass right now. I totally understand that. You just need to get through some short-term pain and avoid having to endure proper hardship. By doing this as well you will further solidify your business and come out stronger and able to take on more clients as a result.

It is always the things that you never expect to break that break. Such is life that what cannot, will not or shall not break, will break.

Remember you want 2’s and above, because a 2 changing to a 1 is a lot better than a 1 changing to a 0.

How Do You Go About Fixing Things

You are in control at the end of the day.

You need to look at what 1’s you do have and ask yourself “how can I make this a 2?”

We have already discussed the common 1’s so changing these should be fairly self explanatory:

-          Only 1 lead gen method = maybe you should run some ads, or set up an email campaign, or send out leaflets. There are plenty of options.

-          Only 1 staff member doing a role or in charge of something critical = train other staff or hire some more people (even if it is a part time hire).

Just have the business savvy to think “what could happen?”

We aren’t talking end of the world or doomsday level problems. You just don’t want to have all this infrastructure in place for it to be taken down by a small hammer.

Same would go if you were a soldier with the best armour. If it had a small gap that could allow for a dagger to stab you then it is all over.

Remember, don’t let your business die that easily.

No matter how big or small your business is, the number 1 is the worst number to have in business. You must go forth and take an in depth look at whether you have any 1’s that could topple your business.
