Use this Writing Trick to Increase Your Sales Without Spending Any Money
Let me take you back to our previous article (https://risecross.com/post/make-millions-in-sales-with-your-writing). There we went over the importance of making sure you hook your reader to ensure that they continue to read what you write.
The first trick is to get someone’s attention. The next is to make sure you don’t lose it as they read on.
Each line needs to lead onto the next line. You have to get people on the edge of their seats the whole way through. They should be wanting more and be sat there thinking “this is exactly what I needed to read”.
So, what is the secret behind this?
You have to approach it like you would approach someone in a bar.
Why Bar Talk Will Massively Help Your Writing
The world of dating and the world of sales are not too dissimilar. They both help out one another.
At the end of the day your goal when approaching a stranger at a bar or a stranger in a business context is the same. You aim to get something from the exchange.
You don’t approach random people and start talking about yourself and how amazing you are. No one wants to hear that (maybe your mum, but no one else). Most people will politely nod their head then try excuse themselves ASAP.
You need to be a normal human being. Less robotic. Less AI like.
Imagine everyone you talk to is an old friend. Yes, you will discuss what you have been up to at some point, but you typically start out by asking all about them. This is what people want to talk about most. Themselves.
You might be thinking, that is great for an in-person interaction, what has this got to do with my writing?
This is the mindset you need to be in when writing. Pretend you are approaching someone at a bar. If you wouldn’t say it to someone you have never met face-to-face, then don’t write it down.
Taking This Test Will Take Your Writing to the Next Level
Now you are in the correct mindset, you can take this very useful test with your copy (the technical word for what you write).
Sit there and think, “is this something I would say to a friend?”
If the answer is no, then you need to reconsider what you have written down.
This may sound a lot easier said than done, so, let’s look at a practical example together:
“If you are a businessperson, then you know that you provide the solution to people’s problems on a daily basis. This is what makes a business. Doesn’t matter if you have a product or service, you offer a solution to a common problem. This is all well and good, except many businesses are not known by enough people to be able to solve their problems.”
Can you imagine someone saying this to you? It would probably go over your head, and you would be sat wondering, “what is this guy on about?”
In a ‘normal’ conversation this might sound more like:
“Most businesses assist people who need help. But it is no secret that you need people to hear about you to get more work, right?”
It is much more succinct and ‘human’ like.
No one wants to listen to the ChatGPT version of a sentence, or they simply wouldn’t be talking with you.
The Follow on to the BAR Test
The BAR test is only truly powerful once you implement the following concept alongside it.
Many people (myself included) will write out their copy and introduce what they think is the BAR test, only to find out that it still doesn’t make much sense.
I will tell you the secret that will make sure this never happens to you. It might sound a bit unorthodox, but trust me, it works. Not only that, but you won’t be able to not use this once you see its effectiveness.
Take what you have written and read it aloud.
That is it. Plain and simple.
And don’t do it half hearted. Really say it as if you was speaking to a friend sat next to you.
If you find yourself tripping over your own words or gasping for air once you reach the end of a sentence, then you need to make some changes. If you, the writer, cannot make your way through your copy, how do you expect someone else to?
You want a smooth flowing passage of text. Words that lead onto the next. Vary the sentence and paragraph lengths. You can have longer sentences, but only as long as your breath can take you to the end of them. You can also have short sentences. They might only have one or two words in. Like this.
As a recap, once you write out what you believe follows the BAR test, then simply take 5 minutes to read it aloud to check if makes sense.
You will be in awe at how much better your writing becomes almost instantaneously.
